Selous Day Trip Safari from Zanzibar — A Fly-In Full-Day Game Safari, Back by Evening

Trade the beach for the bush for one remarkable day and be back on the island by nightfall. This is a fly-in day safari to Nyerere National Park — the wildlife-rich reserve carved from the former Selous Game Reserve — that lifts off from Zanzibar at first light, crosses the coast by light aircraft in about an hour, and lands you inside one of Africa’s largest protected wildernesses for a full day of game drives.

The short flight replaces a long overland journey, so your energy goes into what matters: hours of tracking wildlife across the plains and woodland, and along the Rufiji River, where hippos and crocodiles gather at the water’s edge and some of East Africa’s finest birdlife fills the air. By late afternoon you fly back across the coastline and touch down in Zanzibar in time to unwind — two of Tanzania’s great landscapes experienced between breakfast and dinner.

Overview

The Selous Day Trip Safari from Zanzibar puts one of Africa’s wildest, least-crowded reserves within reach of your beach holiday, no overnight required. A short dawn flight carries you from the island over the Indian Ocean and the miombo woodland to a bush airstrip inside Nyerere National Park — the northern, game-rich heart of the old Selous. Your guide and open 4×4 are waiting the moment you step off the plane, and by mid-morning you’re already deep in the bush.

The heart of the day is unhurried game driving through the reserve’s most productive areas. You cross open floodplains and woodland tracks in search of elephant, lion, giraffe, buffalo, and the reserve’s famous packs of endangered African wild dog. Near the Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest waterway, hippos wallow in the shallows and crocodiles bask on the banks alongside a constant procession of waterbirds, with elephants and giraffe often coming down to drink.

Everything is handled end to end: roundtrip flights, hotel transfers on the Zanzibar side, park fees, a professional safari guide, and a bush lunch out in the reserve. Four of the Big Five roam here — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the elusive leopard — and with over 440 recorded bird species, the birding is exceptional. Whether you’re a first-time safari-goer, a family, or a photographer, this trip delivers a full, authentic taste of Tanzania’s wild interior and flies you home to the island the very same day.

Itinerary

6:00 AM — Hotel Pickup in Zanzibar

Your Rama Zanzibar driver collects you from your hotel or guesthouse anywhere on the island and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Stone Town, ready for the morning safari flight.

7:30 AM — Scenic Charter Flight to Selous

Board a light aircraft for the short crossing to the mainland — roughly an hour on the wing, with sweeping views of the turquoise coastline, winding rivers, and the miombo woodland opening up below as you approach Nyerere National Park.

9:00 AM — Landing & Morning Game Drive

Your guide and open 4×4 meet you at the bush airstrip and the safari begins straight away. The cool morning hours are prime time for predators and big herds, so keep your camera ready for lion, elephant, giraffe, and the reserve’s wild dog packs.

12:30 PM — Bush Lunch by the Rufiji

Pause at a scenic spot near the river for lunch, surrounded by the sounds of the bush. It’s a relaxed break to recharge and take in the atmosphere before the afternoon on the water.

2:00 PM — Afternoon Game Drive

As the heat softens, wildlife stirs again. Your afternoon drive covers more of the reserve and follows the Rufiji riverbanks, where hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds gather in one lively scene and predators become active in the cooler light.

4:00 PM — Return to the Airstrip

As the day winds down, your guide drives you back toward the airstrip, still spotting wildlife along the way — every last stretch counts as safari.

5:00 PM — Return Flight to Zanzibar

Board your flight home and enjoy one final view of the Tanzanian bush and coastline from the air, landing back in Zanzibar in the early evening where your driver transfers you to your hotel.

Best Time to Visit Selous

This fly-in day safari to Nyerere National Park (the former Selous Game Reserve) runs all year, but the seasons shape the day in different ways. The dry months from June to October are the classic window: the bush thins out, wildlife crowds the Rufiji River and its channels, and firm ground makes the game drive easy going. From November through February the landscape turns green and quiet — a favourite of photographers and birdwatchers, with the river full and lively. The long rains of March to May bring lush scenery but the heaviest weather, when the bush airstrip and light-aircraft flights are most likely to be affected, so those months reward flexible dates.

Seats on the light-aircraft flights are limited and fill quickly in peak season (June–October), so booking a few weeks ahead is the best way to lock in your preferred date.

A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience أكيد، هذه بصياغة مختلفة تمامًا بحيث ما تبين نفس تعليق صديقتج، لكنها توصل نفس الفكرة: Title A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Review We booked all our Zanzibar tours with Rama Zanzibar Beach Tours & Safaris, and they made our 4-day trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a single-day fly-in, fly-out wildlife safari to Nyerere National Park (the former Selous Game Reserve). You leave Zanzibar at first light on a short charter flight, spend the day on guided game drives through the reserve, and fly back to the island the same evening. Round-trip flights, park fees, a guide, a 4x4, and a bush lunch are all included.
By a scenic charter flight of roughly one hour each way, over the Indian Ocean coastline and the miombo woodland, landing at a bush airstrip inside the park where your guide and vehicle are waiting. It's one of the closest mainland parks to fly to from Zanzibar, which is exactly what makes a same-day visit possible.
The day trip is game drives only — a single day doesn't leave time for a boat cruise alongside the flights and drives. You'll still follow the Rufiji riverbanks on the drive, where hippos and crocodiles gather at the water's edge. If a boat safari on the Rufiji is a must, ask Rama about the 2-day Selous safari, where it's part of the programme.
Nyerere holds four of the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo and the elusive leopard — but no rhino for viewing. It's also one of Africa's strongholds for the endangered African wild dog, and you can expect giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, plus large numbers of hippo and crocodile along the Rufiji. As with all wild animals, sightings are never guaranteed.
Both refer to the same wilderness. The northern, wildlife-rich section of the old Selous Game Reserve became Nyerere National Park in 2019, and that's the area this safari visits. Many travellers and operators still call it "Selous," so you'll see the two names used side by side.
It's a full day, starting with an early-morning pickup and ending back in Zanzibar in the late afternoon or early evening. Once on the ground you'll have several hours in the park on morning and afternoon game drives, with a bush lunch in between near the Rufiji River.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you're already on the island you do not need a separate visa to visit Nyerere. International travellers should just make sure their existing Tanzania visa is valid for the dates of the trip.
These are light safari aircraft with small cabins and low-level flying that gives lovely views of the coast and river country. Baggage is limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage — and exact allowances are confirmed at booking, so travel light for the day.
It suits families with children roughly aged six and up. The early start and full day can tire very young children, while older kids usually love the flight, the open 4x4 and the hippos. Contact Rama in advance for family arrangements and any dietary needs.
  • Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • A light jacket for the cool early-morning flight
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the open 4x4
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Any personal medications and a valid photo ID
Guest safety comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights — most likely during the long rains — Rama will let you know as early as possible and work to rebook your safari for another date. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking.
Nyerere is a year-round destination, but June to October (dry season) gives the best game viewing, with wildlife concentrated along the Rufiji. November to February is green, quiet and wonderful for birdlife, while the long rains of March–May are lush but most likely to affect the light-aircraft flights.
