Mikumi Day Trip Safari from Zanzibar – A Fly-In Full-Day Game Safari, Back by Sunset
Swap the beach for the bush for one unforgettable day and be back on the island by evening. This is a fly-in day safari that lifts off from Zanzibar at dawn, crosses to the Tanzanian mainland by light aircraft, and lands you deep in Mikumi National Park — the wildlife-rich reserve spread across the Mkata Floodplain in the Morogoro Region — for a full programme of game drives.
The short flight of roughly an hour and twenty minutes replaces a long overland journey, so your energy goes into what matters: hours of tracking lion prides, elephant herds, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and the park’s famous hippo pools with an experienced safari guide. By late afternoon you fly back across the channel, touching down in Zanzibar in time for the sunset — two of Tanzania’s most iconic landscapes experienced in a single day.

Overview
The Mikumi Day Trip Safari from Zanzibar puts a genuine East African game drive within reach of your beach holiday, no overnight stay required. A short dawn flight carries you from the island to a bush airstrip inside Mikumi, Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, where its open Mkata Floodplain is so reminiscent of the Serengeti that visitors call it the “Little Serengeti.” Your guide and 4×4 are waiting the moment you step off the plane.
The heart of the day is unhurried game driving through the park’s most productive areas. Lions rest in the golden grass, elephants move in family groups, and giraffe browse the acacia line while zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog, and buffalo dot the plains. Near the northern section, resident hippos wallow in permanent pools alongside crocodiles and a constant traffic of waterbirds. Four of the Big Five roam here — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the elusive leopard.
Everything is handled end to end: roundtrip flights, hotel transfers on the Zanzibar side, park fees, a professional safari guide, and a bush lunch out on the plains. Whether you are a first-time safari-goer, a family, or a photographer chasing that perfect frame, this trip delivers a full, authentic taste of Tanzania’s wild interior and flies you home to the island the very same day.
Guiding travelers across Zanzibar with a passion for sharing the island’s beauty, culture, and hidden gems. Rama and his local team are committed to delivering authentic experiences, friendly service, and unforgettable adventures across Zanzibar.

Itinerary
Dawn Pickup & Transfer to Zanzibar Airport
The day starts very early. You’re collected from your hotel and driven to Zanzibar Airport, where your guide checks you in for the morning safari flight and runs through what lies ahead.
Scenic Flight to Mikumi
Board a light aircraft for the short crossing to the mainland — roughly an hour and twenty minutes of low-level flying with sweeping views of the coast, the channel, and the Tanzanian interior unfolding beneath you.
Landing & Morning Game Drive
Your guide and 4×4 meet you at the bush airstrip and the safari begins straight away. The cool morning hours are prime time for predators and big herds, so keep your camera ready for lion, elephant, and giraffe.
Explore the Mkata Floodplain
Head out across the park’s signature open plains, where wide horizons make wildlife easy to spot. Zebra, wildebeest, impala, and buffalo gather over the grassland, while the “Little Serengeti” scenery delivers endless photo opportunities.
Bush Lunch on the Plains
Pause at a scenic spot for lunch surrounded by the sounds of the savannah. It’s a relaxed break to recharge, swap sightings from the morning, and simply take in the atmosphere of the wild.
Afternoon Game Drive & Hippo Pools
As the heat softens, wildlife stirs again. Your afternoon loop covers more of the park and takes in the permanent hippo pools, where hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds gather in one lively scene.
In the late afternoon you head back to the airstrip for the flight home, landing in Zanzibar in time for the sunset. A final transfer returns you to your hotel to round off an unforgettable beach-to-bush day.

Best Time to Visit Mikumi
Mikumi welcomes visitors year-round, and this fly-in day safari runs across every season. Game viewing is at its best in the dry months from June to October, when the grass is short, animals gather around shrinking water, and tracks are firm. January–February and November–December are excellent, quieter alternatives. The long rains of March–May bring lush green scenery but can occasionally disrupt the light-aircraft flights, so those months call for a little date flexibility.
Peak season (June–October) is the most popular window for Mikumi, so booking a few days ahead is recommended to secure your preferred date.

The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Mikumi Day Trip Safari from Zanzibar?
It's a single-day fly-in wildlife safari. You leave Zanzibar at dawn on a short domestic flight to Mikumi National Park on the mainland, spend the day on guided game drives, and fly back to the island the same evening. Roundtrip flights, park fees, a guide, a 4×4, and a bush lunch are all included.
How do we get to Mikumi from Zanzibar?
By a short domestic flight of roughly one hour and twenty minutes each way, landing at a bush airstrip in the Mikumi area where your guide and vehicle are waiting. It replaces what would otherwise be a very long overland drive, leaving you far more time in the park.
How long is the day, and how much of it is on safari?
It's a full day, beginning with an early-morning pickup and ending back in Zanzibar around sunset. Once on the ground you'll have roughly six to seven hours of game driving, split between a morning and an afternoon session with a bush lunch in between.
Do I need a separate visa for the mainland?
If you are already in Zanzibar you do not need a separate visa to visit Mikumi, as Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania. International travellers should simply make sure their existing Tanzania visa is valid.
Which animals will I see, and can I see the Big Five?
Mikumi holds four of the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the elusive leopard — but no rhino. You can also expect giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog, and large hippo pods, with a chance of hyena or wild dog. As with all wild animals, sightings are never guaranteed.
What is the flight like, and is there a luggage limit?
These are light safari aircraft with small cabins and low-altitude flying that gives lovely views of the landscape. Baggage allowances are limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage — and exact limits are confirmed at booking, so travel light for the day.
Is it suitable for families and children?
It suits families with children roughly aged six and up. The very early start and long day can be tiring for younger children, while older kids usually love the flight and the hippo pools. Contact Rama for family arrangements and any dietary needs.
What should I wear and bring?
- Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
- A light jacket for the cool early-morning flight
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
- Any personal medications and a valid photo ID
What happens if the flight is delayed or cancelled by weather?
Guest safety comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights, Rama will let you know as early as possible and work to rebook your safari for another date. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking.
When is the best time to go?
Mikumi is a year-round destination, but June to October (dry season) gives the best game viewing, with January–February and November–December excellent alternatives with fewer crowds. The long rains of March–May are lush but can occasionally disrupt light-aircraft flights.
