3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari from Zanzibar — Two Legendary Landscapes, One Fly-In Adventure

Combine the two crown jewels of northern Tanzania in one short fly-in safari. This three-day trip lifts off from Zanzibar in the morning and carries you to the Serengeti — the vast “endless plains” of big cats and the Great Migration — before crossing to the Ngorongoro Crater, a walled volcanic amphitheatre widely called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Two UNESCO World Heritage sites, two very different ecosystems, and a genuine shot at all of the Big Five, without the long overland journey.

You land in the Serengeti and start driving straight away, spend the first night among the plains, then travel through the highlands to the crater rim for your second night. The finale is a descent onto the Ngorongoro floor — a compact, wildlife-packed world where lion, elephant, buffalo, flamingo, and the endangered black rhino share one extraordinary basin. By the afternoon of day three you fly back to the island, having seen the very best of Tanzania’s north in just three days.

Overview

The 3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari from Zanzibar packs two of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations into a single short break from the beach. A morning flight carries you from Zanzibar to Seronera Airstrip in Central Serengeti, landing around late morning where your guide and 4×4 are ready. From the first afternoon you’re out on the plains, tracking the lion, cheetah, elephant, and giraffe that make the Serengeti the most famous safari on earth.

Day two blends more Serengeti game viewing with a scenic transfer into the highlands — a journey that is a game drive in its own right, crossing the southern plains toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The grand finale comes on day three, descending some 600 metres onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. This vast, self-contained caldera holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa — including a resident population of the endangered black rhino — giving you a realistic chance of seeing all of the Big Five in a single morning.

Everything is arranged end to end: flights from Zanzibar to the Serengeti and back from Arusha, hotel transfers on the island, all Serengeti park fees and Ngorongoro crater fees, a professional safari guide, two nights of full-board accommodation, and every game drive. Depending on the season, the Great Migration may also be moving through the Serengeti — a spectacle Rama can help you time. Whether you’re a first-time safari-goer or a seasoned traveller, this trip delivers the definitive Tanzanian double-header and flies you home to the coast on the third day.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Fly In & Serengeti Game Drive

6:30 AM — Hotel Pickup in Zanzibar Your Rama Zanzibar driver collects you from your hotel or guesthouse anywhere on the island and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Stone Town, ready for the morning safari flight.

7:45 AM — Scenic Flight to the Serengeti Board your flight and enjoy the crossing north — the turquoise coastline giving way to highlands and then the golden Serengeti plains, landing at Seronera Airstrip in the heart of the park around late morning.

11:00 AM — Landing & Afternoon Game Drive Your guide and open 4×4 meet you at the airstrip and the safari begins straight away. Break for a picnic lunch out in the bush and spend the afternoon exploring Central Serengeti, on the lookout for lion, cheetah, elephant, and giraffe.

6:00 PM — Dinner & Overnight in the Serengeti As the light fades you arrive at your tented camp or lodge for the night. Settle in, enjoy dinner under the stars, and drift off to the distant sounds of the wild. Overnight in the Serengeti.

Day 2 — Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands

6:30 AM — Sunrise Game Drive in the Serengeti Head out at first light, when the plains are cool and predators most active, for a final morning among the Serengeti’s big cats and herds before you move on.

Late Morning — Scenic Transfer to Ngorongoro After breakfast you travel south and east toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — a drive that is a game drive in itself, crossing the open plains with a picnic lunch along the way.

5:00 PM — Arrival at the Crater Rim & Overnight Arrive at your lodge on the Ngorongoro highlands in time to take in the first views over the crater. The rim is cool and often misty — a dramatic setting for dinner and your second night. Overnight near the crater.

Day 3 — Ngorongoro Crater & Return Flight

6:30 AM — Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater After an early breakfast you drop some 600 metres onto the crater floor for a morning game drive. This wildlife-packed basin offers a real chance of the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino — plus flamingos on the soda lake and dense plains game. Enjoy a picnic lunch amid the action.

Midday — Ascend the Rim & Drive to Arusha Climb back up the crater wall and transfer to Arusha, watching for wildlife as the highlands give way to farmland and town.

Afternoon — Return Flight to Zanzibar Board your flight from Arusha back to the island, taking in a final aerial view of Tanzania as you head home, landing in Zanzibar in the evening.

Evening — Arrival in Zanzibar & Hotel Transfer Your driver is waiting at ZNZ to transfer you back to your hotel — your three-day, two-park adventure complete.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti & Ngorongoro

This safari pairs two year-round destinations, and the Ngorongoro Crater in particular is dependable in every season thanks to its permanent water and resident wildlife. Overall, game viewing is finest in the dry months from June to October, when the Serengeti plains open up and the great herds are on the move. January and February are also excellent — a short, drier spell that brings the dramatic calving season to the southern Serengeti. November and December are green and scenic after the short rains, while the long rains of March to May are the quietest, lushest months, when the crater rim can be cool and misty and light-aircraft schedules are most likely to shift. For migration timing specifically, plan your dates with Rama.

Crater-rim lodges and light-aircraft seats are in high demand in peak season (June–October and the January–February calving), so booking well ahead is the best way to secure your dates and preferred lodges.

A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience أكيد، هذه بصياغة مختلفة تمامًا بحيث ما تبين نفس تعليق صديقتج، لكنها توصل نفس الفكرة: Title A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Review We booked all our Zanzibar tours with Rama Zanzibar Beach Tours & Safaris, and they made our 4-day trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a three-day fly-in safari with two overnights that combines two of Africa's greatest wildlife areas: the Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater. You fly from Zanzibar into the Serengeti, game-drive there and transfer to the crater highlands, then descend into the crater before flying home. Flights, accommodation, all meals, park and crater fees, a 4x4 and a professional guide are included.
The Serengeti-only trip spends both days on the plains for maximum time with the big cats. This version trades one Serengeti day for the Ngorongoro Crater — a compact, wildlife-dense caldera with an exceptional chance of the Big Five in a single game drive, including the black rhino you're unlikely to see in the Serengeti. You also cover more varied landscapes across the two days.
It's the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a vast, walled amphitheatre often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its floor holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa: lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingos on the soda lake, and a resident population of the endangered black rhino.
This is one of the few safaris where seeing all of the Big Five is a realistic goal, largely thanks to the crater. The Ngorongoro floor is the best place in northern Tanzania to spot the black rhino, alongside lion, elephant and buffalo, while leopard are more often found in the Serengeti. Sightings are never guaranteed with wild animals, but the odds here are excellent.
You fly out from Zanzibar to Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti (landing around late morning), then travel overland between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Because the safari ends near the crater, the return flight is usually from Arusha back to Zanzibar on day three. Your guide handles all the transfers in between; exact routing is confirmed at booking.
Two nights, full board: the first at a tented camp or lodge in the Serengeti, the second near the Ngorongoro Crater rim. All breakfasts, lunches (picnic lunches on game-drive days) and dinners are included. Let Rama know of any dietary needs at booking and they'll be arranged in advance.
Possibly — it depends on the season. The migration circles the ecosystem all year: calving on the southern plains around January–February and river crossings in the north around July–October. The Serengeti day offers a chance to meet the herds at transition times, and the crater delivers superb wildlife regardless. Share your dates with Rama and he'll advise where the herds are likely to be.
The rate covers flights (Zanzibar–Serengeti out, Arusha–Zanzibar back), two nights' accommodation, all meals, every game drive in a 4x4, all Serengeti park fees and Ngorongoro crater fees, a professional driver-guide, and airport transfers. Personal spending, drinks, tips and travel insurance are not included.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you're already on the island you do not need a separate visa for the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. International travellers should just make sure their existing Tanzania visa is valid for the dates of the trip.
The Tanzania legs are flown on light safari aircraft with small cabins and low-level flying that gives superb views. Baggage is strictly limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage per person, no hard cases — so pack light for the two nights and confirm exact allowances at booking.
Yes — the variety of the Serengeti and the crater makes it a rewarding family safari for children roughly aged six and up. Note there is a fair amount of driving between the two areas on day two. Some lodges have minimum-age policies, so contact Rama for family arrangements and any requirements before booking.
Keep it light and soft-sided for the aircraft, and pack for cool highlands:
  • Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • Warm layers — the Ngorongoro rim gets genuinely cold, morning and evening
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Toiletries for two nights, personal medications and a valid photo ID
Guest safety always comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights, Rama will let you know as early as possible and work to adjust or rebook your safari. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking, and allow a buffer before any international departure from Zanzibar.
Both areas are rewarding year-round, and the crater is dependable in every season. June to October (dry season) gives the best all-round game viewing, and January–February is excellent for the southern calving. November–December is green and scenic, while the long rains of March–May are quietest, cooler at the rim, and most likely to affect flights.
