Rama Zanzibar 2 Days Mikumi Safari From Zanzibar

2-Day Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar — A Fly-In Overnight in the Bush, Back to the Beach

Give the wild a full day and a night of its own. This two-day fly-in safari lifts off from Zanzibar in the morning, hops the channel to mainland Tanzania by light aircraft, and drops you straight into Mikumi National Park — the game-rich reserve on the Mkata Floodplain in the Morogoro Region — where you settle in for a proper stay rather than a rushed visit. An afternoon drive eases you into the rhythm of the plains, then a comfortable lodge or tented camp becomes your base for the night.

The overnight is what changes everything. Instead of chasing the clock, you have the early-morning and golden-hour windows — the very hours when Mikumi is most alive — and a second, longer day of game driving to reach deeper into the park. By late afternoon on day two you fly back across to the island, trading the roar of the bush for the sound of the sea, with two of Tanzania’s great landscapes tucked into a single short escape.

Overview

The 2-Day Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar turns a beach holiday into a genuine overnight safari without the long overland slog. A short dawn flight carries you from the island to a bush airstrip inside Mikumi, Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, whose sweeping grasslands earn it the nickname the “Little Serengeti.” Your guide and 4×4 are ready the moment you land, and by early afternoon you’re already tracking wildlife across the open plains.

With a night in the park, the safari breathes. Day one closes with an unhurried afternoon and sunset drive before dinner at the lodge and a night under a wide African sky. Day two opens at first light — the coolest, busiest hours for predators and herds — and builds into an extended game drive that can run for the best part of the day, covering ground a single visit simply can’t reach. Lions rest in the golden grass, elephants move in family groups, giraffe browse the acacia line, and permanent hippo pools draw crocodiles and clouds of waterbirds.

Everything is arranged end to end: roundtrip flights, hotel transfers on the Zanzibar side, all park fees, a professional safari guide, full-board meals, and your overnight accommodation. Four of the Big Five roam here — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the elusive leopard — so whether you’re a first-time safari-goer, a family, or a photographer after that dawn frame, this trip delivers a fuller, deeper taste of Tanzania’s wild interior before flying you home to the coast.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Fly In, Afternoon Drive & Overnight

6:00 AM — Hotel Pickup in Zanzibar Your Rama Zanzibar driver collects you from your hotel or guesthouse anywhere on the island and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Stone Town, ready for the morning safari flight.

8:00 AM — Domestic Flight to Mikumi Board your light aircraft and settle in for the short crossing to the mainland — roughly an hour and twenty minutes on the wing, with sweeping views of the coastline and the Tanzanian interior unfolding below as you head southwest.

12:00 PM — Arrival at Mikumi & Welcome Lunch Your guide and 4×4 are waiting at the airstrip. You’re driven the short way to your lodge or tented camp inside the park, where a relaxed welcome lunch gives you time to settle before the afternoon’s driving.

2:00 PM — Afternoon & Sunset Game Drive Head out across the Mkata Floodplain for your first game drive. Late afternoon is prime time in Mikumi — the light turns golden, the heat eases, and the animals grow active. Look for elephant herds around the waterholes, lions on the open grass, and gatherings of zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and buffalo.

6:30 PM — Return to the Lodge As the sun drops behind the plains, your guide brings you back to camp. There’s time to freshen up and enjoy the quiet as the bush shifts into its evening rhythm.

7:30 PM — Dinner Under the African Sky Sit down to dinner at the lodge, surrounded by the sounds of the wild — distant lion calls, the stir of nocturnal life, and a sky thick with stars far from any city light. Overnight in Mikumi National Park.

Day 2 — Full-Day Game Drive & Return Flight

6:30 AM — Sunrise Breakfast at the Lodge Wake to birdsong and cool morning air, and enjoy breakfast at the lodge as first light spreads across the grassland — the coolest, busiest hours for predators and big herds on the move.

8:00 AM — Full-Day Game Drive (approx. 8 hours) Today is your longest and most rewarding window. Your guide takes you deep into the park — the hippo pools where hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds gather, the open floodplain where elephant herds feed in the morning, and the woodland edges where leopard and African wild dog are occasionally seen. A full day in the vehicle gives you the best possible chance at Mikumi’s rarer residents.

12:30 PM — Bush Lunch on the Plains Your guide pulls up at a scenic picnic spot inside the park for an unhurried bush lunch, out among the sights and sounds of the savannah.

2:00 PM — Exit Game Drive En Route to the Airstrip The safari isn’t over until you leave the gate. Your guide keeps the drive going all the way to the airstrip, making the most of every last stretch of the park.

5:00 PM — Final Photo Stop at the Airstrip A brief pause near the airstrip for last photographs of the bush before you board.

6:00 PM — Return Flight to Zanzibar Board your return flight and take in one final view of the Tanzanian wilderness from the air as you cross back toward the island.

7:30 PM — Arrival in Zanzibar & Hotel Transfer Touch down at ZNZ in the evening, where your driver is waiting to transfer you back to your hotel — your two-day beach-to-bush escape complete.

Best Time to Visit Mikumi

The 2-day fly-in safari runs throughout the year, and every season shows Mikumi in a different light. The dry months from June to October are the classic choice: the grass is low, wildlife concentrates around the last remaining water, and the overnight lodge sits under clear, star-filled skies. January and February offer a warm, drier break in the calendar with lively birdlife, while November and December stay rewarding and less crowded. The long rains of March to May turn the plains a deep green and can occasionally shift the light-aircraft schedule, so those months reward a little flexibility with your dates.

Because the overnight stay is on a fixed lodge or camp, the dry-season window (June–October) fills up fastest — booking a few weeks ahead helps secure both your preferred date and your room.

A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience أكيد، هذه بصياغة مختلفة تمامًا بحيث ما تبين نفس تعليق صديقتج، لكنها توصل نفس الفكرة: Title A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Review We booked all our Zanzibar tours with Rama Zanzibar Beach Tours & Safaris, and they made our 4-day trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a two-day fly-in wildlife safari with one overnight in the bush. You leave Zanzibar on a short morning flight to Mikumi National Park, spend the afternoon on a game drive, sleep at a safari lodge or camp, then enjoy an extended game drive the next day before flying back in the evening. Round-trip flights, accommodation, all meals, park fees, a 4x4 and a professional guide are included.
Yes. You travel by a short domestic flight of roughly one hour and twenty minutes each way, landing at a bush airstrip near Mikumi where your guide and vehicle are waiting. Flying instead of driving skips a very long overland journey and gives you far more time in the park across both days.
You spend the night at a comfortable safari lodge or tented camp in the Mikumi area, and the stay is full board — lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast and lunch on day two. Let Rama know of any dietary needs at booking and they will be arranged with the lodge in advance.
The rate covers round-trip flights between Zanzibar and Mikumi, one night's accommodation, all meals, every game drive in a 4x4, all park and service fees, a professional driver-guide, and transfers between your Zanzibar hotel and the airport. Personal spending, drinks, tips and travel insurance are not included.
Plenty. Day one includes an afternoon and sunset drive after you arrive, and day two is built around an extended game drive of up to eight hours that reaches deeper into the park. The overnight is exactly what a single day can't offer — early-morning and golden-hour hours out among the wildlife.
Mikumi holds four of the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo and the elusive leopard — but no rhino. Expect giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog and large hippo pods too, with a chance of hyena or wild dog. The extra day genuinely improves your odds of the rarer sightings, though with wild animals nothing is ever guaranteed.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you are already on the island you do not need a separate visa for Mikumi. International travellers should simply make sure their existing Tanzania visa is still valid for the dates of the trip.
These are light safari aircraft with small cabins and low-level flying that gives lovely views of the coast and interior. Baggage is limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage per person — so pack a small overnight bag for the one night and confirm exact allowances at booking.
It suits families with children roughly aged six and up. The overnight actually makes it gentler than a single long day, since the pace is spread across two mornings, and most kids love the flight, the lodge and the hippo pools. Contact Rama for family room arrangements and any special requirements.
Keep it light for the small aircraft:
  • Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • A light layer for cool mornings and the flight
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Toiletries for one night, personal medications and a valid photo ID
Guest safety always comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights, Rama will let you know as early as possible and work to rebook your safari for another date. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking.
Mikumi is a year-round destination, but June to October (dry season) gives the best game viewing, with January–February and November–December as excellent, quieter alternatives. The long rains of March–May are lush and green but can occasionally disrupt the light-aircraft flights, so build in a little date flexibility.
