2-Day Selous Safari from Zanzibar — A Fly-In Overnight with a Rufiji River Boat Safari

Give the wild a full day and a night of its own. This two-day fly-in safari lifts off from Zanzibar in the morning, crosses the coast to mainland Tanzania by light aircraft in about an hour, and drops you into Nyerere National Park — the game-rich heart of the former Selous Game Reserve and one of Africa’s largest protected wildernesses. Day one is all about the game drive; a comfortable lodge or tented camp then becomes your base for the night.

What makes the overnight special is the water. On the morning of day two you swap the 4×4 for a boat and glide along the mighty Rufiji River — Tanzania’s largest waterway — past hippos, crocodiles, and some of East Africa’s finest birdlife, a perspective the single-day trip simply can’t offer. By afternoon you fly back across to the island, trading the roar of the bush for the sound of the sea, with a game drive and a river safari tucked into one short, unforgettable escape.

Overview

The 2-Day Selous Safari from Zanzibar turns a beach holiday into a genuine overnight safari in one of Africa’s wildest, least-crowded reserves. A short dawn flight carries you from the island over the Indian Ocean and miombo woodland to a bush airstrip inside Nyerere National Park — the northern, game-rich section of the old Selous. Your guide and open 4×4 are waiting the moment you land, and by mid-morning you’re already deep in the bush on a full-day game drive.

With a night in the reserve, the safari breathes. Day one crosses open floodplains and woodland tracks in search of elephant, lion, giraffe, buffalo, and Selous’s famous packs of endangered African wild dog, with a picnic lunch out among the wildlife before dinner and a night under a wide African sky. Day two opens on the water: a boat safari on the Rufiji River, where hippos surface beside the boat, crocodiles bask on the banks, and waterbirds fill the channels — one of the few places in Tanzania to watch wildlife from a boat.

Everything is arranged end to end: roundtrip flights, hotel transfers on the Zanzibar side, all park fees, a professional safari guide, full-board meals, your overnight accommodation, the game drives, and the Rufiji boat safari. Four of the Big Five roam here — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the elusive leopard — and with over 440 recorded bird species, the birding is exceptional. Whether you’re a first-time safari-goer, a family, or a photographer, this trip delivers a fuller, deeper taste of Tanzania’s wild interior before flying you home to the coast.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Fly In, Full-Day Game Drive & Overnight

6:00 AM — Hotel Pickup in Zanzibar Your Rama Zanzibar driver collects you from your hotel or guesthouse anywhere on the island and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Stone Town, ready for the morning safari flight.

7:00 AM — Scenic Charter Flight to Selous Board a light aircraft for the short crossing to the mainland — roughly an hour on the wing, with sweeping views of the turquoise coastline, winding rivers, and the miombo woodland opening up below as you approach Nyerere National Park.

8:15 AM — Arrival & Game Drive Begins Your guide and open 4×4 meet you at the bush airstrip. After a short briefing the safari starts straight away, out across the reserve in the cool morning hours — prime time for lion, elephant, giraffe, and the reserve’s wild dog packs.

1:00 PM — Picnic Lunch in the Bush Pause at a scenic spot for a relaxed picnic lunch surrounded by the sounds of the savannah, then continue the afternoon game drive as the light softens and wildlife grows active again.

6:00 PM — Check In, Dinner & Overnight at the Lodge As the sun drops, you arrive at your lodge or tented camp for the night. Freshen up before dinner, surrounded by the sounds of the wild — distant lion calls, the stir of nocturnal life, and a sky thick with stars. Overnight in Selous.

Day 2 — Rufiji Boat Safari & Return Flight

6:30 AM — Sunrise & Breakfast Wake to birdsong and cool morning air, and enjoy breakfast at the lodge as first light spreads across the reserve — the perfect start before heading out onto the river.

7:00 AM — Boat Safari on the Rufiji River Swap the vehicle for a boat and cruise the Rufiji — one of the few places in Tanzania to watch wildlife from the water. Hippos surface beside you, crocodiles line the banks, and waterbirds fill the channels, with elephants and giraffe often coming down to drink in the early light.

12:00 PM — Lunch & Check Out Return to the lodge for lunch and time to relax before checking out and gathering your things for the journey home.

1:30 PM — En-Route Game Drive to the Airstrip The safari isn’t over until you leave the gate. Your guide keeps the drive going all the way to the airstrip, making the most of every last stretch of the reserve.

2:30 PM — Return Flight to Zanzibar Board your return flight and take in one final view of the Tanzanian wilderness and coastline from the air as you cross back toward the island.

3:30 PM — Arrival in Zanzibar & Hotel Transfer Touch down at ZNZ, where your driver is waiting to transfer you back to your hotel — your two-day beach-to-bush escape complete.

Best Time to Visit Selous

This overnight fly-in safari to Nyerere National Park (the former Selous Game Reserve) runs year-round, and each season shapes the two days differently. The dry months from June to October are the classic window: the bush thins out, wildlife gathers along the Rufiji River — perfect for the boat safari — and firm tracks make the full-day game drive easy going. From November through February the landscape turns green and quiet, a favourite of photographers and birdwatchers, with the river high and full of life. The long rains of March to May bring lush scenery but the heaviest weather, when the bush airstrip and light-aircraft flights are most likely to be affected, so those months reward flexible dates.

A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience أكيد، هذه بصياغة مختلفة تمامًا بحيث ما تبين نفس تعليق صديقتج، لكنها توصل نفس الفكرة: Title A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Review We booked all our Zanzibar tours with Rama Zanzibar Beach Tours & Safaris, and they made our 4-day trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a two-day fly-in safari with one overnight in Nyerere National Park (the former Selous Game Reserve). Day one is a full-day game drive; day two is the famous Rufiji River boat safari before you fly home. Round-trip flights, accommodation, all meals, park fees, a 4x4 and a professional guide are included.
The day trip is game drives only, there and back in a day. The two-day adds the overnight — which unlocks the two things a single day can't fit: an early-morning Rufiji boat safari and the calm, golden hours around dawn and dusk. If the boat safari is on your list, this is the trip that includes it.
The Rufiji is Tanzania's largest river, and Selous is one of the few places you can watch wildlife from the water. Gliding along the channels you'll see hippos surfacing beside the boat, crocodiles on the banks, and exceptional birdlife, with elephants and giraffe often coming down to drink. It's a completely different perspective from the game drive.
You spend the night at a comfortable safari lodge or tented camp in the Selous area, and the stay is full board — lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast and lunch on day two. Let Rama know of any dietary needs at booking and they'll be arranged with the lodge in advance.
The rate covers round-trip flights between Zanzibar and Selous, one night's accommodation, all meals, the game drives and the Rufiji boat safari, all park and service fees, a professional driver-guide, and transfers between your Zanzibar hotel and the airport. Personal spending, drinks, tips and travel insurance are not included.
Nyerere holds four of the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo and the elusive leopard — but no rhino for viewing. It's also a stronghold for the endangered African wild dog, and you can expect giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, plus large numbers of hippo and crocodile along the Rufiji. The overnight genuinely improves your odds of the rarer sightings, though with wild animals nothing is ever guaranteed.
Both refer to the same wilderness. The northern, wildlife-rich section of the old Selous Game Reserve became Nyerere National Park in 2019, and that's the area this safari visits. Many travellers and operators still call it "Selous," so you'll see the two names used side by side.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you're already on the island you do not need a separate visa to visit Nyerere. International travellers should just make sure their existing Tanzania visa is valid for the dates of the trip.
These are light safari aircraft with small cabins and low-level flying that gives lovely views of the coast and river country. Baggage is limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage per person — so pack a small overnight bag for the one night and confirm exact allowances at booking.
It suits families with children roughly aged six and up. The overnight makes it gentler than a single long day, with the pace spread across two mornings, and most kids love the flight, the boat safari and the hippos. Contact Rama for family room arrangements and any special requirements.
Keep it light for the small aircraft:
  • Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • A light layer for cool mornings, the flight and the boat
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Toiletries for one night, personal medications and a valid photo ID
Guest safety always comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights — most likely during the long rains — Rama will let you know as early as possible and work to rebook your safari for another date. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking.
Nyerere is a year-round destination, but June to October (dry season) gives the best game viewing, with wildlife concentrated along the Rufiji. November to February is green, quiet and wonderful for birdlife, while the long rains of March–May are lush but most likely to affect the light-aircraft flights.
