3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara Safari from Zanzibar — Three Parks, One Fly-In Adventure

Experience the very best of northern Tanzania’s classic safari circuit in one short fly-in break from the beach. This three-day trip lifts off from Zanzibar in the morning and lands in Arusha in about an hour, then strings together three of Tanzania’s most rewarding parks — the elephant country of Tarangire, the wildlife-packed Ngorongoro Crater, and the lush, lion-dotted forests of Lake Manyara — each with a character all its own.

Two nights in the cool Karatu highlands give the safari a relaxed rhythm, with a different landscape and a fresh set of sightings every day. From the great baobabs and elephant herds of Tarangire, to a descent onto the Ngorongoro floor for a genuine shot at all of the Big Five, to Manyara’s tree-climbing lions and flamingo-lined lakeshore, this is a complete northern-circuit safari — before you fly back to the island on day three.

Overview

The 3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara Safari from Zanzibar is the classic northern-circuit short safari, made easy with flights on both ends. A morning flight carries you from the island to Arusha — around an hour, with views of the Indian Ocean and Mount Meru — where your guide and 4×4 are waiting. Because these three parks sit close together near Arusha, you spend your time on game drives rather than long transfers, and reach your first park the same day.

The safari unfolds one landscape at a time. Tarangire opens the trip with its ancient baobabs and some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. The Ngorongoro Crater delivers the headline day — a descent onto the floor of a vast volcanic caldera where lion, elephant, buffalo, flamingo, and the endangered black rhino share one extraordinary basin, giving a realistic chance at all of the Big Five. Lake Manyara then rounds things off with a completely different feel: a lush groundwater forest and a shimmering soda lake beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, famous for tree-climbing lions, big baboon troops, and clouds of flamingos.

Everything is arranged end to end: return flights, hotel transfers on the island, all Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro crater fees, a professional safari guide, two nights of full-board accommodation in the Karatu highlands, and every game drive. Whether you’re a first-time safari-goer, a family, or a keen photographer, this trip packs three iconic parks and a strong Big Five chance into just three days — and flies you home to the coast at the end.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Fly to Arusha & Tarangire National Park

6:00 AM — Hotel Pickup in Zanzibar Your Rama Zanzibar driver collects you from your hotel or guesthouse anywhere on the island and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Stone Town, ready for the morning safari flight.

8:00 AM — Scenic Flight to Arusha Board a light aircraft for the crossing to the mainland — around an hour, with fine views of the Indian Ocean and, on a clear day, Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro ahead. You land in Arusha mid-morning.

9:30 AM — Meet Your Guide & Drive to Tarangire Your guide and 4×4 meet you at the airport for a short briefing, then it’s a scenic drive of roughly two hours to Tarangire National Park.

Afternoon — Game Drive in Tarangire Explore Tarangire’s baobab-studded landscape and wildlife-rich river, with a picnic lunch in the park. This is elephant country — expect large herds, along with lion, giraffe, zebra, and superb birdlife.

Evening — Drive to the Lodge & Overnight As the day ends you head to your lodge in the Karatu highlands near the Lake Manyara escarpment. Settle in for dinner and a restful night. Overnight in the highlands.

Day 2 — Ngorongoro Crater

6:00 AM — Early Breakfast & Descend into the Crater After an early start you drop some 600 metres down the crater wall onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, carrying a packed lunch for the day.

Morning — Game Drive on the Crater Floor Spend the heart of the day exploring this wildlife-packed basin, with a real chance of the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino — plus flamingos on the soda lake, hippos, and dense plains game.

Midday — Picnic Lunch in the Crater Pause for lunch amid the extraordinary scenery of the crater floor, surrounded by the sights and sounds of one of Africa’s greatest wildlife arenas.

Afternoon — Ascend the Rim & Return to the Lodge Climb back up the crater wall and return to your lodge in the Karatu highlands for dinner and your second night. Overnight in the highlands.

Day 3 — Lake Manyara & Return Flight

After Breakfast — Game Drive in Lake Manyara Descend to Lake Manyara National Park at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment — a lush contrast to the previous days. Explore the groundwater forest and lakeshore in search of tree-climbing lions, elephants, big baboon troops, hippos, and flamingos massed on the soda lake.

Afternoon — Drive to Arusha & Return Flight After the game drive you travel back to Arusha for your afternoon flight to Zanzibar, landing on the island in the evening.

Evening — Arrival in Zanzibar & Hotel Transfer Your driver is waiting at ZNZ to transfer you back to your hotel — your three-park, three-day adventure complete.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara

All three parks reward visitors year-round, and the Ngorongoro Crater is dependable in every season thanks to its enclosed, water-rich floor. Game viewing is at its finest in the dry months from June to October, when Tarangire's elephant herds and Lake Manyara's game concentrate around the water and the tracks are firm. January and February are a good, drier window. The green season from November to May is quieter and beautifully scenic — and often the best time for Lake Manyara's birdlife and flamingos — though the long rains of March to May can leave the crater rim cool and misty and shift light-aircraft schedules, so those months reward flexible dates.

Northern-circuit lodges and the light-aircraft seats are in high demand in peak season (June–October), so booking a few weeks ahead is the best way to secure both your dates and preferred lodge in the Karatu highlands.

A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience أكيد، هذه بصياغة مختلفة تمامًا بحيث ما تبين نفس تعليق صديقتج، لكنها توصل نفس الفكرة: Title A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Review We booked all our Zanzibar tours with Rama Zanzibar Beach Tours & Safaris, and they made our 4-day trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a three-day fly-in safari with two overnights covering three of northern Tanzania's classic parks — Tarangire on day one, the Ngorongoro Crater on day two, and Lake Manyara on day three. You fly from Zanzibar to Arusha and back, with return flights, accommodation, all meals, every park and crater fee, a 4x4 and a professional guide included.
Tarangire — huge elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. Ngorongoro Crater — a wildlife-packed caldera with a real chance of the Big Five, including black rhino. Lake Manyara — famous tree-climbing lions, flamingo flocks on the soda lake, and big baboon troops in a lush groundwater forest beneath the Rift Valley escarpment. Three very different ecosystems in three days.
It's the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a vast, walled amphitheatre often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its floor holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa: lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingos on the soda lake, and a resident population of the endangered black rhino.
Lake Manyara is one of only a handful of places where lions habitually rest up in the trees, draped along the branches of acacias — a rare and much-photographed behaviour. It's a special sighting rather than a guaranteed one, but Manyara is the park best known for it, alongside its flamingos, elephants and baboons.
This trip gives an excellent shot at all of the Big Five. Tarangire and Manyara deliver elephant, buffalo and lion (with a chance of leopard), while the Ngorongoro floor is the top place in northern Tanzania for the endangered black rhino. Sightings are never guaranteed with wild animals, but spreading the safari across three parks improves your odds.
You fly from Zanzibar to Arusha — roughly an hour in the air, landing mid-morning — then travel by road between the parks, which sit relatively close together. The safari finishes near Arusha, so you take an afternoon flight from Arusha back to Zanzibar on day three. Your guide handles every transfer in between.
You spend two nights at a lodge in the Karatu / Lake Manyara escarpment area, a convenient base for both the crater and Manyara, on a full-board basis — all breakfasts, lunches (picnic lunches on game-drive days) and dinners are included. Let Rama know of any dietary needs at booking.
The rate covers return flights between Zanzibar and Arusha, two nights' accommodation, all meals, every game drive in a 4x4, all Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro crater fees, a professional driver-guide, and transfers. Personal spending, drinks, tips and travel insurance are not included.
This is the fuller version: it keeps Tarangire and the crater but adds a third park — Lake Manyara — and a second overnight. That means a more relaxed pace, an extra ecosystem, and the chance of Manyara's tree-climbing lions and flamingos. If time is tighter, the 2-day Tarangire & Ngorongoro covers the two headline parks in one night.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you're already on the island you do not need a separate visa for these parks. International travellers should just make sure their existing Tanzania visa is valid for the dates of the trip.
The Zanzibar–Arusha legs are flown on light aircraft with lovely views of the Indian Ocean and Mount Meru. Baggage is limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage per person, no hard cases — so pack light for the two nights and confirm exact allowances at booking.
Yes — the variety across three parks makes it a rewarding family safari for children roughly aged six and up. There is a fair amount of driving between parks each day, so it suits kids who travel well. Some lodges have minimum-age policies, so contact Rama for family arrangements before booking.
Keep it light and soft-sided for the aircraft, and pack for cool highlands:
  • Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • Warm layers — the Ngorongoro rim gets genuinely cold, morning and evening
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Toiletries for two nights, personal medications and a valid photo ID
Guest safety always comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights, Rama will let you know as early as possible and work to adjust or rebook your safari. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking, and allow a buffer before any international departure from Zanzibar.
June to October (dry season) gives the best all-round game viewing, when wildlife gathers at the water. The crater is rewarding year-round, and the green season (November–May) is beautiful and often the best time for Lake Manyara's birdlife and flamingos. The long rains of March–May are quietest and most likely to affect flights.
