From Stone Town’s historic waterfront, you’ll board a traditional boat to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. Famous for its colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some over 150 years old, the island also features beautiful coral beaches and intriguing historical ruins that reflect its past as a quarantine station. After spending time with these gentle giants, you’ll continue your journey aboard a dhow to Nakupenda Sandbank, where powder-soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters create the perfect setting for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation.

Hotel Pickup & Drive to Stone Town

Your guide collects you from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and heads to Stone Town. The drive time depends on your location.

Stone Town Walking Tour

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site on foot with your guide. Visit key landmarks including the Old Fort, House of Wonders, Sultan’s Palace area, Anglican Cathedral and former Slave Market site, Darajani Market, Forodhani Gardens, and the atmospheric narrow streets filled with Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influences.

Learn about the island’s spice and trade history while soaking in the lively atmosphere.

Boat to Prison Island

Board a traditional boat for the short 20–30 minute ride to Prison Island (Changuu Island).

Prison Island Visit

Explore the historic prison/quarantine ruins and visit the giant Aldabra tortoise sanctuary. Meet and (optionally) feed the gentle giants, some weighing up to 250 kg and living well over 100 years. Enjoy free time to walk the island, swim, or snorkel in the clear surrounding waters.

Nakupenda Sandbank

Continue by boat to Nakupenda Sandbank. Step onto the soft white sand surrounded by turquoise water. Swim, snorkel, sunbathe, and relax. Seasonal fruits and a simple seafood lunch or refreshments are often enjoyed here (confirm inclusions when booking).

Return to Your Hotel

The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Booking through WhatsApp was easy, communication was fast, and they confirmed our schedule every day.
