This full-day combo is built around Zanzibar’s green, wild and scenic south — a natural loop that carries you from the island’s only rainforest down to the turtle caves of Kizimkazi and up onto the Michamvi peninsula for lunch and sunset. It is an easy, richly varied day that suits couples, families and first-time visitors who want to see the best of the south coast without booking four separate excursions.
You’ll open in the cool shade of Jozani Forest, home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a primate found nowhere else on the planet. After a guided forest walk and a stroll along the raised mangrove boardwalk, the route drops south to Salaam Cave, a natural limestone pool near Kizimkazi where sea turtles glide through crystal-clear water and swimmers can meet them up close in a calm, sheltered setting.
The afternoon shifts to the peninsula. Lunch is at The Rock Restaurant, the much-photographed little building that sits on its own rock in the ocean — reachable on foot at low tide or by short boat at high tide. As the light softens, you finish at Kae Funk on the west-facing Kae shore, where colourful beanbags, swings, cocktails and easy music set the scene for a sunset over the lagoon. Your guide handles all the timing around tides and sundown so every stop lands at its best moment.

Itinerary
Hotel Pickup & Drive South
Your guide meets you at your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and sets off along the main road toward the island’s green interior. Depending on where you’re staying, the drive to the forest takes roughly 40–60 minutes through coral-rag farmland and small roadside villages.
Jozani Forest & the Red Colobus Monkeys
At the Jozani gate you’re joined by an official park ranger for a short briefing, then walk into the groundwater forest where troops of red colobus feed and rest. Endemic to Zanzibar and unbothered by people, they let you watch from just a few metres as they leap, groom and carry their young through the canopy.
Mangrove Boardwalk Walk
Cross to the Pete–Jozani mangroves, where a raised timber walkway carries you out over the tidal channel. It’s shaded, quiet and one of the loveliest stretches of the whole visit — a good place to spot crabs, birdlife and the slow pulse of the tide.
Drive to Kizimkazi & Salaam Cave
Continue south toward the fishing village of Kizimkazi and the entrance to Salaam Cave. Steps lead down into a natural limestone chamber where clear, calm water fills a sheltered pool and resident sea turtles move gently through it.
Swim with the Turtles
Slip into the cool water and share the pool with the turtles, keeping a respectful distance as they swim around you. Your guide explains the local conservation effort and helps with photos, so you leave with the memory and the pictures both intact.
Lunch at The Rock Restaurant
Head up onto the Michamvi peninsula to The Rock, the small restaurant marooned on a coral outcrop in the sea off Pingwe. At low tide you walk out across the sand; at high tide a short boat carries you over. Settle in for a seafood-led lunch with the ocean on every side. (our price does not include the food price.)
Sunset at Kae Funk
As the afternoon eases off, cross to the west-facing Kae shore and Kae Funk beach bar. Sink into a beanbag, order a cocktail and watch the sky turn over the lagoon, with other entertainments including acrobatic shows and soft music giving way to a livelier beat as the sun goes down.
Return to Your Hotel
