The Spice Farm, Prison Island & Stone Town Tour stitches together three very different sides of the island into one relaxed, full day. You begin among the trees of a working spice plantation, where your farm guide crushes a leaf here, peels a root there, and hands you clove, nutmeg, lemongrass and vanilla to smell and taste. It’s a hands-on, sensory start that explains why these islands were once fought over for their spices.
From there you head to the harbour and board a short boat ride to Prison Island, officially called Changuu. Its giant Aldabra tortoises — some well over a hundred years old — roam a shaded sanctuary where you can walk among them, feed them, and hear the strange history of the island’s former quarantine station and prison buildings.
The day closes back on the main island in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage maze of carved wooden doors, spice-scented markets and grand seafront buildings. Hotel Pickup & Drive to the Spice Farm
Your guide meets you at your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and sets off toward the spice-growing belt in the island’s interior. The drive is a gentle introduction to everyday Zanzibar, rolling past villages, plantations and roadside markets.
Guided Spice Plantation Walk
At the farm a local grower leads you along shaded paths between the crops, pulling up roots and picking leaves, pods and fruit for you to touch, smell and taste. You’ll meet cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla and lemongrass growing in the ground rather than in a jar — and learn how each is harvested and used.
Fresh Fruit Tasting
Before you leave, you’re offered a platter of seasonal tropical fruit straight from the farm, with time to shop for spices, oils and teas to take home if you wish.
Drive to the Harbour & Boat to Prison Island
Continue toward Stone Town’s waterfront, where a short traditional boat ride carries you across to Prison Island (Changuu), around twenty to thirty minutes offshore.
Giant Tortoise Sanctuary
