You sit at a window seat while the reef passes by outside. There is no diving, no snorkeling, and nothing to learn beforehand.
The experience begins at the departure lounge at Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town, where you’ll meet your captain, receive a full safety briefing and enjoy a welcome drink. A speedboat then transfers you to a floating platform offshore, where you step aboard the semi-submarine and head out to the reefs around Bawe Island — a sheltered, shallow coral system directly in front of Stone Town, known for its calm conditions and dense marine life. Safety divers enter the water alongside the vessel and interact with the fish just outside your window, while a photographer captures the moment.

Your day begins with a comfortable pickup from your hotel and a short transfer to the departure lounge at Forodhani Gardens, on the Stone Town seafront next to the Cape Town Fish Market. You’ll be welcomed with a drink in a shaded, air-conditioned waiting area with WiFi while the team confirms your booking and prepares your group.
Safety Briefing & Meeting Your Crew
Before boarding, your captain and crew walk you through the full safety briefing — life jacket location and use, emergency exit procedure, and how the vessel operates. It takes just a few minutes and is designed so that first-time guests, children and nervous travellers all feel completely at ease before stepping aboard.
Speedboat Transfer to the Boarding Platform
A short, exhilarating speedboat ride takes you from the shoreline out to a floating boarding platform anchored offshore. From the deck you’ll get your first proper view of the Stone Town waterfront from the water, with the dhow harbour and the old sea wall stretching out behind you.
Step Aboard & Descend Into the Cabin
Shoes off, you board the semi-submarine and take your seat in the viewing cabin below deck. Each passenger gets their own window. The vessel is heavily ballasted — around eight of its ten tonnes sit in the hull — which is what keeps the ride steady and the view stable rather than rolling.
Cruise the Bawe Island Reef
The submarine cruises slowly over the reef systems around Bawe Island while your guide points out what’s passing outside: coral formations, blue-spotted stingrays resting on the sand, moray eels tucked into crevices, cuttlefish, batfish, parrotfish and passing schools of reef fish. The exact reef visited depends on the tide on the day, which keeps every trip slightly different.
Divers in the Water
Safety divers enter the water and swim directly alongside the windows, interacting with the fish and drawing them in close to the glass. Sandbank Stop & Return (Reef & Beach package)
On the Reef & Beach itinerary, a tender boat transfers you to a white sandbank in front of Stone Town for swimming, sunbathing and a picnic box before the return crossing. On the Classic Reef itinerary, the submarine surfaces and cruises back to the platform, and the speedboat returns you to Forodhani — with a hotel transfer back if booked.

Best Time for a Zanzibar Submarine Tour
The semi-submarine runs year-round from Forodhani, and because the Bawe Island reef sits on Zanzibar's sheltered west coast, it is protected from the strongest seasonal swells. What changes month to month is underwater visibility. The clearest water falls between September and March, when calm seas and low runoff give you the sharpest view through the windows. April and May bring the long rains, when sediment reduces visibility and some departures may be moved.

No. Swimming ability is not required for any part of the reef cruise. Guests remain seated inside the vessel throughout, life jackets are provided and stowed above every seat, and a full safety briefing is given before boarding. This makes the tour a genuine option for non-swimmers, nervous travellers and older guests who want to see the reef but cannot snorkel.
If you book the Reef & Beach package, the sandbank stop includes optional swimming — but it is entirely optional and you can stay on the sand.

Yes. The minimum age is 7 years, and there are no weight restrictions. Younger children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Because there is no snorkeling, no equipment and nothing to learn, the submarine is often the best option for families whose children are too young to snorkel safely on other tours.

If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication before departure, choose a morning slot when the sea is calmest, and use the open upper deck for fresh air. The vessel and boarding platform are not fully adapted for wheelchair users, and boarding involves a step transfer between boats.
