The Stone Town & Prison Island Tour brings together two completely different sides of Zanzibar in one relaxed, well-paced day. You’ll begin on foot in Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the historic heart of the island — where your guide leads you through a labyrinth of coral-stone alleyways past carved wooden doors, bustling markets, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European history.

From the old town it’s a short boat ride across the channel to Prison Island — also called Changuu. Here you’ll meet the island’s famous giant Aldabra tortoises, gifted from the Seychelles in 1919, several now over 100 years old with their ages painted on their shells. You’ll also explore the weathered ruins of the “prison that was never used” and enjoy free time on the white-sand shore.

Itinerary

Hotel Pickup & Arrival in Stone Town

Your guide collects you from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle (or meets you in town) and heads to the Stone Town seafront. The drive takes roughly 10–60 minutes depending on where you are staying.

Guided Stone Town Walking Tour

Explore the UNESCO labyrinth with your local guide. Visit the Old Fort, House of Wonders, Sultan’s Palace and Old Dispensary along the waterfront, then turn into the narrow alleys to see iconic carved doors, mosques and temples. Continue to the Old Slave Market memorial and Anglican Cathedral, then through Darajani Market and past Freddie Mercury’s childhood house, finishing near Forodhani Gardens.

Boat Ride to Prison Island

Board your boat at the Stone Town seafront for the short, scenic 20–30 minute crossing across calm turquoise water to Changuu Island, with views back to the Stone Town skyline.

Giant Tortoise Sanctuary

Step ashore and meet the island’s protected colony of giant Aldabra tortoises. Feed them fresh greens, watch them roam freely and learn about their conservation story — many are well over 100 years old, with ages marked on their shells.

Historic Ruins & Beach Time
