Best Time to Kitesurf in Zanzibar
Kitesurfing in Zanzibar follows the Indian Ocean trade winds. Two windy seasons — the Kusi (June to September) and the Kaskazi (December to February) — deliver the steady side-onshore wind that makes Paje one of the world's best flat-water kite spots. The shallow, reef-protected lagoon stays warm all year, so it's the wind, not the water, that sets the calendar.
Peak wind runs June–September (Kusi) and December–February (Kaskazi). The Kusi is stronger and best for experienced riders and wave sessions; the lighter, warmer Kaskazi is ideal for first-time lessons and freestyle in the flat lagoon. April, May and November are transition months with lighter, less reliable wind. Message Rama on WhatsApp to check the live wind forecast and lock in your session dates.

The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
What is kitesurfing in Zanzibar?
Kitesurfing in Zanzibar is a wind-powered watersport where you ride a small board across the water while harnessed to a large steerable kite. It’s centered on Paje Beach on the southeast coast, whose shallow, reef-protected lagoon and steady trade winds make it one of the top kite destinations in the world for both learning and advanced riding.
Where does kitesurfing take place?
The main spot is Paje Beach on Zanzibar’s southeast coast. A wide, shallow lagoon is held flat by an offshore coral reef, creating a safe flat-water zone close to shore, with reef breaks further out for experienced riders and wave sessions.
Do I need experience to try kitesurfing?
No. Paje is one of the best places in the world to learn. Complete beginners start with ground school and body dragging in shallow water, guided by an IKO-certified instructor. Experienced riders can rent gear and session independently once their level is confirmed.
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing:
- Swimwear / boardshorts
- Rashguard (sun protection)
- Towel
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Sunglasses & hat
- Waterproof phone or camera case
- A change of clothes
- Personal medications if required
What happens if there's no wind?
Safety and quality always come first, so sessions run only in kiteable wind. If the wind drops on your booked day, we’ll reschedule your lesson or help you arrange an alternative — Paje’s calm days are perfect for snorkeling, diving, SUP, or a Jozani Forest trip.
Why is Paje one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world?
Paje combines everything a kiter wants: dependable side-onshore trade winds, a huge shallow flat-water lagoon, warm water year-round, and a relaxed beach scene. Beginners get safe, forgiving conditions close to shore, while experts get flat water for freestyle and foiling plus reef waves — all on one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth.
