You’ll begin under the canopy of Jozani Forest — the island’s only national park — home to the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a species found nowhere else on Earth. From the forest, the day turns to the sea. A short drive brings you to the southeast coast near the Michamvi Peninsula, where you board a traditional wooden boat out to the Blue Lagoon. Here the corals lie close to the surface in warm, sheltered water, and the seabed is dotted with one of the Indian Ocean’s densest starfish populations — an easy, unforgettable snorkel among clouds of tropical reef fish.

Itinerary
Hotel Pickup & Drive to the Forest
Your guide meets you at your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and sets off toward the interior. The drive takes roughly 40–60 minutes depending on where you’re staying, rolling past coral-rag farmland and everyday village life along the way.
Arrival & Park Briefing at Jozani
At the Jozani gate you’re introduced to your official park ranger. A short briefing covers the forest, the wildlife you’re likely to see, and the simple rules that keep the monkeys wild — keep a respectful distance, never feed them, and let them approach on their own terms.
Meet the Red Colobus Monkeys
A gentle walk brings you to the grove where the troops gather. The Zanzibar red colobus is endemic to the island and completely at ease around visitors, so you’ll often watch from just a few metres away as they leap between branches, groom one another, and carry their young.
Guided Nature Trail Through the Forest
Follow the shaded trail deeper into the groundwater forest, where mahogany and fig trees rise from the seasonally flooded floor. Your ranger points out medicinal plants, butterflies, birdlife, and signs of the forest’s shyer residents, from Sykes’ monkeys to bush babies.
Walk the Mangrove Boardwalk
Cross to the Pete–Jozani mangrove forest, where a raised timber boardwalk carries you out over the tidal channel. Quiet and shaded, it’s one of the most peaceful stretches of the whole visit and a favourite for photos.
Snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon
Drive on to the southeast coast and board a traditional wooden boat out to the Blue Lagoon.
