Zanzibar offers warm-water diving all year. The dry months — June to October and December to March — bring the calmest seas and clearest water, with visibility often exceeding 20–30 metres. September to December adds the seasonal chance of whale sharks around Mnemba, while April and May (the long rains) see reduced visibility and some sites running on a limited basis.

How deep will I dive?

It depends on your certification and experience. Discover Scuba and Open Water divers typically stay within 12–18 metres, while Advanced and experienced divers can explore walls and drifts down to 30 metres or more at sites like Mnemba’s Big Wall and Leven Bank.

What marine life can I expect to see?

Zanzibar’s reefs are home to over 500 species. Expect green and hawksbill turtles, schooling reef fish, moray eels, octopus, groupers, triggerfish, lionfish, and colourful nudibranchs. At deeper and open-ocean sites you may encounter reef sharks, barracuda, tuna, trevally, kingfish, and rays. From September to December there’s a seasonal chance of whale sharks around Mnemba — though, as with all wild animals, sightings are never guaranteed.

What's the water temperature — do I need a wetsuit?

The Indian Ocean stays warm year-round, ranging from about 25°C in the cooler months (July–September) to 29°C in the warm season. A light 3mm wetsuit is provided and is plenty for comfort on most dives.

Can non-swimmers or nervous beginners try scuba diving?

Basic comfort in water is recommended, but you don’t need to be a strong swimmer for a Discover Scuba session. Your instructor stays beside you the entire time, works at your pace, and keeps you in shallow, calm water. Many guests take their very first breath underwater with us and go on to love it.

Are children allowed to dive?

Yes. Children aged 10 and over can take part in a PADI Discover Scuba or junior certification, in line with PADI standards, with depth limits appropriate to their age. Younger children may prefer our snorkeling tours.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Diver safety always comes first. If sea or weather conditions are considered unsafe, dives may be rescheduled, relocated to a more sheltered site, or refunded. Because conditions depend on tides, wind, and currents, the exact dive site may occasionally change to ensure the best and safest possible experience.
