Overview
Mnemba Island Snorkeling is Zanzibar’s most rewarding half-day sea trip, taking you out to the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area — a horseshoe of coral reef surrounding a small private island off the north-east coast. The atoll is a no-take protected zone, which is exactly why the coral is healthy, the fish are plentiful, and the water is the clearest on the island.
You’ll depart by boat from Matemwe beach in the early morning, when the sea is at its calmest and the light underwater is at its best. Along the way, your captain will look for the pod of bottlenose dolphins that lives in these waters. At the reef you’ll snorkel in warm, shallow, current-free water over coral gardens alive with butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels, and green sea turtles — with masks, fins and life jackets provided, and your guide in the water alongside you.
Perfect for couples, families with children, first-time snorkelers, and photographers, the trip is short enough to pair with an afternoon on the beach or a second excursion. If you’re looking for the best snorkeling in Zanzibar, Mnemba Atoll is the answer — and it’s the reason so many of our guests book it twice.

Itinerary
Early Hotel Pickup
Your day starts early with a comfortable pickup from your hotel and a short drive to Matemwe, the fishing village on Zanzibar’s north-east coast that serves as the gateway to Mnemba Atoll. Your guide will run through the plan for the morning and answer any questions before you reach the beach.
Board Your Boat at Matemwe
Step aboard at the water’s edge and set off across the shallows toward the atoll. The early start is deliberate — the sea is calmest at dawn, the water is at its clearest, and you’ll reach the reef ahead of the crowds.
Watch for Wild Dolphins
As you cross the channel, your captain will look out for the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins that patrols the water between Matemwe and Mnemba. Sightings are common but never guaranteed — these are wild animals in their own habitat, and we always keep a respectful distance.
Gear Up and Get a Briefing
At the reef, your guide fits your mask, fins and life jacket and runs a short briefing covering breathing through the snorkel, clearing your mask, and how to float over coral without touching it. Complete beginners are welcome — your guide stays in the water with you throughout.
Snorkel the Mnemba Reef
Slip into warm, clear, sheltered water and drift over coral gardens teeming with life. Expect butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, moray eels, lionfish and often green sea turtles, all in visibility that regularly reaches 20–30 metres. You’ll typically snorkel across two sites, with a rest on the boat between them.
Rest and Refresh on Board
Between snorkel sessions, dry off on deck with fresh tropical fruits and cold drinks while your guide talks you through what you’ve just seen and why the atoll’s protected status matters to Zanzibar’s reefs.
Cruise Back to Matemwe
Sail back across the turquoise shallows with the morning sun behind you and return comfortably to your hotel — usually by early afternoon, leaving the rest of your day free for the beach or a second excursion.

Best Time to Visit Mnemba Atoll
Mnemba snorkeling runs year-round. The dry seasons — June to October and December to February — bring the calmest crossings and the clearest water, with visibility often reaching 20–30 metres. The long rains in April and May can stir up the channel and reduce visibility, though trips still operate whenever the sea allows.
- Excellent — calm seas, best visibility
- Good — occasional showers
- Moderate — rainy season, still operates
Boats leave at first light for the calmest water and the best visibility, and the atoll has a daily visitor cap — booking a few days ahead is strongly recommended in peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Mnemba Island Snorkeling tour?
Mnemba Island Snorkeling is a half-day boat excursion to the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area, a protected coral atoll off Zanzibar’s north-east coast. The trip departs by boat from Matemwe at sunrise, looks for wild dolphins on the crossing, and includes guided snorkeling over the reef with equipment, tropical fruits, and drinks provided.
Where is Mnemba Island?
Mnemba is a small private island roughly 4.5 km off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, opposite Matemwe. It is surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped coral reef known as Mnemba Atoll, which is a protected marine conservation area and widely considered the best snorkeling and diving site in Zanzibar.
Can we land on Mnemba Island?
No. Mnemba Island is privately leased and reserved for guests of the lodge on it, so no tour operator in Zanzibar can land there. This excursion snorkels the reef surrounding the island — which is where the marine life is — and does not include a stop on the island itself
How long does the tour last?
The excursion is a half-day trip, usually lasting 4–5 hours door to door, including hotel transfers. Boats depart early in the morning for the calmest sea and the clearest water, so pickups are typically between 6:00 and 7:30 am depending on your hotel’s location, and you’ll normally be back by early afternoon.
Can non-swimmers and beginners join?
Yes. Life jackets are provided and your guide stays in the water alongside you, so guests who cannot swim can still float comfortably over the reef and see everything. If you’d rather stay dry, you’re welcome to remain on the boat and enjoy the crossing, the dolphins, and the scenery.
What marine life can I expect to see?
The atoll’s protected reef supports butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, surgeonfish, moray eels, lionfish, starfish and healthy hard and soft coral. Green sea turtles are seen regularly, and bottlenose dolphins often appear on the crossing. Because these are wild animals in their natural habitat, no sighting is ever guaranteed.
Will we swim with dolphins?
Dolphins are frequently seen on the way to and from the atoll, and your captain will slow down so you can watch them. We do not chase, crowd, or drive into pods, and we follow the conservation area’s guidelines on keeping a respectful distance — which is also why the dolphins keep coming back to these waters.
What should I bring?
- Swimwear (worn under your clothes)
- Towel
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Waterproof phone or camera case
- Light clothing
- A change of clothes
- Personal medications if required
Are children allowed?
Yes. Mnemba snorkeling is family-friendly and popular with children, who often see more on the reef than the adults do. Child-sized masks and life jackets are available on request when booking. Parents or guardians are responsible for supervising young children on the boat and in the water.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Guest safety always comes first. If sea conditions in the channel are unsafe, the trip will be rescheduled to another morning or alternative arrangements will be discussed with you. Because the crossing depends on wind and tide, departure times may occasionally shift to give you the best possible conditions on the reef.
Why is Mnemba the best snorkeling in Zanzibar?
Because it’s protected. Mnemba Atoll is a no-take marine conservation area, which means the coral is intact, the fish are abundant and unafraid, and the water is clearer than anywhere else around the island — visibility regularly reaches 20–30 metres. Add a half-day format, calm sheltered water, resident turtles, and a genuine chance of wild dolphins on the crossing, and it’s the single best-value underwater experience in Zanzibar.
