Overview
Jet skiing in Zanzibar is the island’s most direct hit of adrenaline on the water, and it happens on the best stretch of coast for it. Nungwi and Kendwa sit on Zanzibar’s northern tip, where the beaches face north and stay sheltered from the trade winds that chop up the east coast. The water here is flat, warm and deep enough to ride at any hour — these beaches have almost no tidal variation, so unlike the east coast the ocean never disappears a kilometre out at low tide.
Your session starts with a full safety briefing from a professional instructor: how the throttle and steering work, how to stop, where the riding zone is marked, and how to handle the machine in a swell. First-timers are covered from the start, so nervous riders and confident ones both get a session that fits them. You’ll ride solo or in tandem, follow the coastline past Kendwa’s white sand and out toward the open water off Tumbatu Island, and finish with a run back into the beach.
Whether you’re looking for the best water sport in Zanzibar, a shot of adrenaline between beach days, or something more memorable than another lounger, jet skiing delivers speed, freedom and scenery in under an hour. Hotel pickup from the Nungwi and Kendwa area is available, life jackets and instruction are included, and sessions can be combined with snorkelling or a sunset ride for a fuller half-day.
Guiding travelers across Zanzibar with a passion for sharing the island’s beauty, culture, and hidden gems. Rama and his local team are committed to delivering authentic experiences, friendly service, and unforgettable adventures across Zanzibar.

Best Time for Jet Skiing in Zanzibar
Jet skiing runs all year at Nungwi and Kendwa on Zanzibar’s northern tip — the calmest stretch of coast on the island. Because these beaches face north, they sit sheltered from the southern kusi trade winds that roughen the east coast from June to October, and they have almost no tidal variation, so the water stays rideable at any hour of the day. The flattest, clearest conditions come in June to October and December to March, with morning sessions consistently glassier than afternoons.
- Excellent — flat water, light wind, best riding
- Good — breezier or brief passing showers
- Moderate — long rains, sessions may shift times
Booking tip: jet ski slots are limited and fill fastest in July, August and December through February. Morning departures give you the calmest water and the best light for photos — message Rama on WhatsApp a day or two ahead to lock in your preferred time.

A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience أكيد، هذه بصياغة مختلفة تمامًا بحيث ما تبين نفس تعليق صديقتج، لكنها توصل نفس الفكرة: Title A Stress-Free & Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Review We booked all our Zanzibar tours with Rama Zanzibar Beach Tours & Safaris, and they made our 4-day trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The team was always responsive on WhatsApp, confirmed our plans every day, and happily accommodated any changes we wanted to make. They also recommended activities that suited our interests, which made planning s o much easier. We experienced Salam Cave, the Spice Farm, snorkeling, horse riding, Nakupenda Sandbank, Stone Town, and a private Sunset Cruise. Most of our tours were private, with our own comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, and even our boat was exclusively for our group. As a group of Arab girls, we really appreciated the privacy and the sense of security throughout the trip. Everyone we met was friendly, respectful, and professional. We never felt rushed—they were always smiling and saying “Hakuna Matata!”, which perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of Zanzibar. The service was excellent, the prices were fair, and the overall organization was outstanding. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking fo r a safe, reliable, and well-organized tour company in Zanzibar.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence to ride a jet ski in Zanzibar?
No. No boating licence or prior experience is required to jet ski in Zanzibar. Every rider receives a full safety briefing from a professional instructor covering the throttle, steering, stopping, restarting and the boundaries of the marked riding zone before entering the water. Most first-timers are riding confidently within the first few minutes.
Where does jet skiing take place in Zanzibar?
Jet ski sessions run from Nungwi Beach and Kendwa Beach on Zanzibar’s northern tip. These north-facing beaches are the calmest on the island — they are sheltered from the southern kusi trade winds that roughen the east coast, and they have minimal tidal variation, so the water stays deep enough to ride throughout the day.
How long is a jet ski session?
Standard sessions run 30 minutes or 1 hour of riding time. With hotel pickup, the safety briefing, gearing up and the return transfer, allow roughly 2 to 3 hours in total depending on where your hotel is located.
Can two people ride the same jet ski?
Yes. Jet skis can be ridden in tandem, with one person driving and a passenger behind. This is popular with couples and with parents riding alongside older children. Both riders wear life jackets, and the driver must meet the minimum age requirement.
What is the minimum age for jet skiing?
Riders generally need to be 16 or older to drive, and younger children may ride as passengers with a responsible adult driving. Please confirm ages when booking so the right arrangement can be made.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You do not need to be a strong swimmer. Every rider wears a life jacket for the entire session, the riding zone is marked and supervised, and an instructor is on the water with you throughout. Tell your guide before you start if you are not confident in deep water so they can keep you in the shallower part of the zone.
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing:
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Sunglasses with a strap
- A change of clothes
- Waterproof phone or camera case
- Any personal medication you may need
Leave loose jewellery, watches and anything that cannot get wet at your hotel.
Can I get photos or video of my ride?
Yes. Drone filming can be arranged as an optional extra, with professionally edited photos and video delivered after your session. Let us know when booking if you’d like this added, as it needs to be arranged in advance.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Guest safety always comes first. If wind, swell or storm conditions make riding unsafe, your session will be rescheduled to a calmer time the same day or moved to another date. Because conditions on the north coast can change through the day, morning slots are usually the calmest and most reliable.
Can jet skiing be combined with other activities?
Because sessions are short and based in Nungwi and Kendwa, jet skiing combines easily with snorkelling, a sunset dhow cruise, swimming with turtles at Nungwi, or a visit to Mnemba Atoll on the same day. Message Rama on WhatsApp to build a combined half-day or full-day plan.
